Every morning before the city became busy, Ricardo, was already watering the garden.
The sun slowly rose over the quiet villas of Dubai, shining gently on rows of green plants and colorful flowers.
Ricardo held a long hose, carefully guiding water across the soil.
For many people living in the neighborhood, the garden was simply decoration. But for Ricardo, it was his responsibility.
Ricardo came from Bukidnon, a province in the Philippines known for its wide farms and cool mountain air. His parents were famers who grew corn and vegetables on a small piece of land.
As a child, Ricardo spent many afternoons helping his father plant crops and remove weeds.
“Plants need patience,” his father often told him.
“You can’t rush their growth.”
Ricardo remembered those words years later when he decided to work abroad.
After finishing high school, he stayed in Bukidnon helping his parents on the farm. But farming alone did not bring enough income for the entire family.
One day, a neighbor told him about job opportunities for gardeners in the United Arab Emirates.
The work sounded familiar.
Ricardo already knew how to care for plants. So he applied.
Months later, he boarded a plane for the first time in his life.
In Dubai, Ricardo worked as a gardener for a landscaping company that maintained gardens n private homes, parks, and hotels.
The environment was very different from the green mountains of Bukidnon.
Dubai was surrounded by desert. Growing plants in such a hot place required special care.
Ricardo and his team planted flowers, trimmed trees, watered lawns, and maintained irrigation systems.
Every day began early. Before the intense heat arrived, they watered plants and checked soil conditions.
Ricardo carefully trimmed hedges into neat shapes and removed dry leaves from flower beds.
Slowly, the garden he cared for transformed into a peaceful green space.
Colorful flowers bloomed. Grass grew thick and soft. Palm trees swayed gently in the warm wind.
Sometimes the homeowners walked through the garden in the evening.
They admired the plants and fresh air. Many of them didn’t know Ricardo’s name but they enjoyed the beauty he helped create and that made him proud.
During lunch breaks, Ricardo often sat under a shaded tree with other workers.
They talked about their families back home. “Miss ko na bundok sa Amin,” Ricardo once said. “I miss the mountains.”
Living in the desert made him appreciate the green fields of Bukidnon even more.
Every month, Ricardo sent money home to his parents.
The money helped improve their farm and pay for his younger sister’s education.
Little by little, their lives became better. Working abroad was not always easy.
The summer heat in Dubai was extremely intense. Some days the temperature rose above 40 degrees Celsius.
But Ricardo stayed focused.
He wore protective clothing, drank plenty of water, and continued caring for the plants because he believed something simple but important.
Plants grow when someone cares for them and families grow stronger when someone sacrifices for them.
One afternoon, a small child from the house where Ricardo worked approached the garden.
The boy watched him planting new flowers.
“Are you making garden?” The child asked curiously.
“Yes,” Ricardo replied with a smile.
“Why?” Ricardo thought for a moment.
“Because gardens make people happy.”
The child nodded and continued watching as Ricardo planted bright red flowers in the soil.
Years passed, and Ricardo became one one the most skilled gardeners in his company. His supervisors trusted him to manage large landscaping projects.
But no matter how beautiful the gardens in Dubai became, Ricardo’s heart still belonged to Bukidnon.
After several years abroad, he finally returned home for vacation. The fresh mountain air greeted him as he stepped off the bus.
His parents welcomed him warmly. Their farm looked healthier than ever.
New irrigation pipes had been installed, and the crops grew strong and green.
That evening, Ricardo walked through the fields with his father. The sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains.
Ricardo smiled because the lessons he learned as a child were still true.
Pants need patience. Dreams do too. And sometimes, just like a garden, the future grows quietly watered by sacrifice, cared for the with love and blooming beautifully for the family waiting at home.
